Here is a selection
of my favourites. These have all been published or won prizes in
short story competitions.
"Thirty Dollars" is
strongly disliked by some readers. It doesn't compromise in a couple
of the descriptions.
But then reality never compromises so why should a story?
It was runner-up in the Mathew Prichard award.
I once tried a creative writing exercise where the task set was to
write something with a lot of contrast. "Moths in Porbandar"
was the end result. It fitted the theme of the first
Orange Labyrinth
competition, "Culture Clash", and was a prize winner behind Lindsey
Mountford's "School
Bell".
It's a technique I recommend. This story was runner-up in the
Real Writers
short story competition.
"One Small Step" is a science fiction
story with added comedy just for fun. I would probably try to
include more humour if writing it today. It was a prize winner in
the Bridport Prize.
I've always enjoyed stories where modern civilisation is destroyed.
Judging by the popularity of "The Day of the Triffids" so do many other
people.
"The Precipice" is my
attempt at the genre. The finished story is more depressing than I
intended.
It was runner-up in the Focus on Fiction
competition and was published in
Cadenza.
